According to a recent discovery in 2021, four new monstera species were discovered in Central America. One of which, known as the monstera titanum, produces the largest inflorescence of the rest of the monstera plant genus. It is unclear just how large this monstera grows, but this wasn’t the only monstera discovered. The monstera gigas climbs to more than 100 feet high and produces leaves that are over 2-3 meters long! In this article, we will go over some of the largest monstera plants ever discovered, including some brand-new monstera species. We’ll tell you how large most monsteras typically grow, whether they are grown indoors or out. Let’s get started and learn all about the monstrous growth of wild-grown monstera plants now!
Where is the Largest Monstera Plant Located?
While Costa Rica currently holds the record for the most endemic monstera species, the largest monstera plants ever were discovered in Panama between 2016 and 2021. Two separate species hold separate titles when it comes to just how large these plants are. The most recently discovered monstera species consists of the monstera titanum and the monstera gigas. According to a paper published by Firenze University Press, the monstera titanum holds the record for producing the largest inflorescences of any other monstera plant. But the monstera gigas holds the record for the largest foliage and tallest heights of any other monstera. This is an important distinction to be made, especially when we go over just how large both of these new monstera species are!
How Large is the Largest Monstera Plant?
It’s difficult to say just how large the largest monstera plant is. Given the fact that monsteras grow to such immense heights in their natural habitats, it’s hard to locate these specimens and document just how large they actually are. However, the recently discovered monstera titanum and monstera gigas were large enough to merit some documentation! The monstera gigas, discovered in Panama, towered at least 100 feet into the air. In fact, this species was almost entirely missed because of its height, vining and growing over the heads of the scientists sent to research monstera plants! The foliage on this monstera species was immense, with some individual leaves and stems reaching nearly ten feet in length! The monstera titanum was another species discovered in Panama. But this giant beauty was given the title of the largest monstera inflorescence producer rather than the largest monstera, period. The flowers found on the monstera titanum average anywhere from one to two feet in size, often as large as a person’s torso! Just like other monstera species, the monstera titanum produces flowers, but no other monstera can grow them quite as large.
How Large Do Monsteras Usually Grow?
Depending on where you choose to grow your monstera plants, they typically reach an average height of 6 to 10 feet indoors. When grown outdoors in an area that mimics their natural habitats of Central and South America, monsteras can reach over 50 feet tall. Some specimens regularly broach 60 feet or more. While it of course depends on the overall health of the monstera plant in question as well as the climate in which it is growing, monstera plants are quick growers and readily vine multiple feet into the air. Their vining growth habit is truly what makes them so tall and large. However, just about any monstera will produce large and impressive foliage, both indoors and out! That’s why discovering a monstera that is over 100 feet tall is an impressive feat. Their vining nature truly helps them grow, but a specimen like the newly-discovered monstera gigas is a fascinating find.
Will My Monstera Houseplant Ever Get This Big?
Unfortunately, indoor-grown monstera houseplants will never get as large as any monstera that is grown outdoors. Due to its limited capacity in a container-grown setting, monsteras can’t reach more than ten feet tall. However, you may get lucky if you plant your monstera in a large enough pot and ensure that it is receiving adequate light, water, and fertilizer throughout its life.
