Confrontation Between Bears

The footage starts off with a peaceful scene of a brown bear foraging for plants on the leafy ground. The sun is filtering through the trees and the flies are buzzing around in a perfect scene of natural tranquility. But this does not last for long! On the scene arrives another brown bear. The distinctive muscular shoulder humps and ‘grizzled’ fur of this species are clearly visible. The new arrival makes growling noises which triggers a reaction from the first bear. The bears approach each other growling and both rise up onto their rear legs which makes them appear larger. One seems to hide behind a tree to gain protection from the other. In fact, the tree plays quite an important part in the confrontation and keeps the bears away from each other for a while. They both use their teeth, claws and sheer brute power to try to overcome the other bear. It’s a protracted stand-off, both bears are very agitated and neither wants to give up. A closer angle gives the extreme intensity of the fight, which turns into a brutal wrestling match. It is easy to see how bears can get seriously injured in these confrontations. You can see and hear clumps of fur being ripped from skin!

Grizzly Bear Behavior and Lifestyle

About halfway through this confrontation, one bear appears to get the upper hand as the other one is on their back on the ground. Then, they both appear to be exhausted and pause for a rest. Panting heavily, both bears give themselves time to recover before walking away. Grizzly bears are mainly solitary animals but come together to mate. This is the time when most fights break out between the males. They are disputing territory and the mating rights for females. Grizzly bears start to look for a mate in the spring and early summer. As we see here, bears try to communicate their dominance through vocalization and body language. It is best for them not to resort to physical fights as that risks injury but sometimes a physical confrontation will take place.
