Black bears are omnivores (they eat both plants and animals). Their diet depends on what is available to them at the time. In some locations, they will eat berries or nuts, but in others, they may eat insects or carrion (dead animals). Black bears are also very strong for their size and can climb trees quite well. These characteristics help them survive in their habitat. They enable bears to evade predators or escape danger by climbing up into a tree if necessary. In this beautiful video, a peaceful young black bear breaks onto a balcony. It does not harm anyone or break anything. As the woman’s voice commands the bear to leave, the creature obeys.

Are Black Bears Friendly?

Black bears are generally shy animals that prefer to avoid humans. But they can become aggressive when they feel threatened. They have been known to attack humans who get too close or corner them. Black bears are generally not aggressive toward people. They are naturally wary of humans and usually avoid confrontation if given a chance. Even if a black bear attacks you, it is unlikely to do so without warning. The best way to prevent an attack is by avoiding areas where they live and keep your distance from their cubs. Here’s what you should do if you encounter a black bear in the wild:

Walk Away Slowly

If the bear is near, walk in the opposite direction and continue to move away from it. Bears have poor vision and are not fast runners, so they will usually lose interest if you can get far away from them.

Make Noise

Make noise by yelling or banging pots and pans together. This helps to identify yourself as human and warns the bear of your presence.

Do Not Climb a Tree

Black bears are excellent climbers and can easily reach most trees’ tops. While climbing may seem easy to escape an attacking bear, it is not recommended as it could put you at greater risk of injury or death. If a bear attacks a person climbing a tree, it will continue to attack until the human climbs down or falls out of the tree.

Do Not Run

Most bears prefer to avoid confrontation and retreat when they feel threatened or notice that they can no longer catch their prey (you!). But if an attack does occur, fight back aggressively with whatever objects are available (such as rocks and sticks). In some cases, it may be necessary to “play dead.” Bears are highly intelligent creatures. They have an excellent sense of smell and hearing and can be quite stealthy. That’s why it’s essential to remain calm when encountering a black bear in the wild. Get out of the animal’s way and let it pass if you can, or make yourself appear as large as possible (so it doesn’t mistake you for prey). Once the bear is aware that you’re there, it will move away from you.
